Elden Ring Nightreign: Scholar Remembrance Quest Walkthrough & Reward Guide
Master the Scholar Remembrance Quest in Elden Ring Nightreign with this step-by-step guide covering chapter unlocks, journal locations, and rewards.
The Scholar in Elden Ring Nightreign might look like the sort of Nightfarer who would rather annotate a dusty tome than trade blows with a Nightlord, but the Scholar Remembrance Quest is a full-contact reading assignment. Nine chapters, frozen castles, a trip through the Great Hollow, an audience with angels and demons, and enough glowing crystals to make a miner jealous. Buckle up, folks—this chain has more detours than a Limveld swamp tour.

Unlocking the Scholar’s Remembrance
Before any book-reading can happen, the Chapel doors need to swing open. After downloading the Nightreign DLC, head to the spot where the Small Jar Merchant once lurked. The doors are now slightly ajar, and interacting with them teleports the player straight into a battleground with the Dreglord—win or lose, that fight is a free sample.
Back at the Roundtable Hold, the Chapel doors open properly, allowing recruitment of both the Scholar and the Undertaker. A few expeditions as the Scholar grant the first memory fragments. No need to win the earliest chapters, since Chapter 3 arrives regardless, but a little determination never hurt anybody... right before it does.
By Chapter 3, the actual Remembrance begins. Spawn into the Chapel area, read the book on the desk, and receive a personal objective tied to the Limveld Map.

Chapter 3: The Vassal’s Journal
The game says "find the journal beneath a marsh," but Limveld loves trolling players. Sometimes the area is a poisonous swamp; other times it is a frozen castle. The dungeon layout stays identical either way. For the smoothest run, enter solo mode without Shifting Earth events and skip the leveling process entirely.
The journal waits under a sunken castle, marked on the minimap by a little red bell. The path inside is simple enough:
-
Beeline toward the bell marker and enter the main sunken doorway.
-
Take a left, then another left, and drop to a lower ledge.
-
Look for an opening in the right-hand wall.
-
Continue through the hole and drop again.
-
Spot the journal sitting on a desk.
Grab the journal and stay in the match until it ends. Quitting out means doing the whole scavenger hunt again, and nobody needs that kind of negativity.
Back at the Chapel, the Undertaker can be found licking suspicious purple slime on the wall. For players who have completed her own Remembrance, this is apparently normal behavior. Exhaust her dialogue, chat with the Iron Menial in the doorway, inspect the Journal on the desk, then speak with the Undertaker again and declare an intention to leave Roundtable Hold. The spiral of light opens the next chapter.
Reward: the Scholar’s Chalice, featuring a Red slot, a Blue slot, and a Universal color slot. Not flashy, but practical—like a good pair of reading glasses.
Chapter 5: A Shortcut to the Great Hollow
When Chapter 5 starts, head west to the Small Jar Merchant and ask to be shown to the Great Hollow. This teleports the party directly to the northwest castle without launching a true expedition. Handy, but combat still awaits.
Equip relics that grant starting items—throwing pots, knives, or ideally a Wraith Calling Bell—because the Scholar’s Rapier hits about as hard as a polite suggestion. Frostbite or bleed on the starting weapon also works.
Inside, clear the ground-floor mage enemies first. Then take the first staircase, cross the room, and climb the second flight. Jump from the broken railing to the enormous hanging rock, turn right, and hop to the rafters. A hole in the wall contains a door that mentions inspecting the source of the noise below.
Look over the other side of the rafters to spot two Marauders and one Godskin Apostle. It has to be said: nobody enjoys fighting that group without cheese, and throwing pots absolutely counts as cheese. Toss them down for splash damage, drop in, and use the Scholar’s Ultimate to link the trio. Retreat to the stairs to funnel them into single file, then delete them calmly.
Once the boss falls, return to the mysterious door and interact with the giant crystal inside. Chapter done.
Reward: the Cleansing Tear Relic, a Red Slot relic offering continuous damage on enemies threaded by the Ultimate Art, improved affinity damage negation, and extra Art gauge gain from defeats. For players lacking item-boosting relics, this is a solid start.
Chapter 8: The Hidden Balancers Checkpoint
Plenty of people believe the Remembrance ends after the Great Hollow. It absolutely does not—it just pretends to. Chapter 8 only unlocks after the Scholar beats the Balancers. If they remain undefeated, this chapter remains invisible.

Inside the next chapter, speak with the Undertaker in the Chapel until she hands back the Monocle Case. Check the map, head to the Dresser room, look in the mirror, and return to the Chapel. Interact with the desk and select the “Oneself” option. That adds a fresh objective: kill the Dreglord.
Simple. Probably.
The Dreglord Showdown
While still inside the Remembrance, queue up an expedition against the Dreglord. This boss is a proper nuisance: two health bars, multiple individual phases, no glaring weakness, and an unhealthy obsession with Scarlet Rot. Building resistance or equipping relics that benefit from Scarlet Rot can turn the tide.

Keep some distance, constantly apply the Scholar’s main character skill to weaken the brute, and chip away until the screen says victory. Completing this expedition grants the Headband of the Golden Ones.
Return to the Undertaker, exhaust her dialogue one final time, then interact with the Chapel table. That’s it—Remembrance complete.

All Scholar Remembrance Rewards
Completing the final table interaction gives the Scholar his Remembrance skin, with the newly acquired Headband perched proudly on his head. If this was the player’s first Dreglord clear, the Dawn and Darkness skins also unlock. On the fashion side, Oswald of Carim’s Set from Dark Souls 1 and the gloriously absurd Xanthous Set—a recurring outfit across FromSoftware games—become available.
The real keep-sake, however, is a yellow relic called Note “My Dear Successor.”
-
Allies targeted by Character Skill gain boosted attack
-
Prevents slowing of Character Skill progress
-
Character Skill Cooldown Reduction +3
This relic is bizarrely late, considering how important it is. Before obtaining it, the Scholar’s analysis circles around allies did nothing meaningful—they only affected enemies. With this relic, the Scholar can actually buff teammates, making him a genuinely valuable support pick instead of a well-dressed liability.
