How I Broke the Crystal Curse in Elden Ring Nightreign's Great Hollow
The Elden Ring Nightreign Crystal Curse in Forsaken Hollow DLC halves your max HP in Great Hollow; resonate with four glowing crystals to shatter it.
So there I was, strutting into one of the Great Hollow's enormous fortress areas like I owned the place, when my health bar suddenly decided to cosplay as a half-eaten ration. If you have been exploring the Forsaken Hollow DLC for Elden Ring Nightreign in 2026 and noticed your vitality mysteriously chopped in half, congratulations—you have just been formally introduced to the Crystal Curse. I spent far too long panicking near a Site of Grace, but after some trial, error, and one very unfortunate death, I cracked the whole system. Here is everything I learned about breaking this glittering nightmare.
What Is the Crystal Curse, Anyway?
The Crystal Curse is a location-based affliction tied to the Great Hollow Shifting Earth event. It only triggers when you step into either of the two large fortress areas found in the northwest and southeast portions of the map. The moment you cross into those cursed hotspots, your max health gets slashed in half. It is not a visual bug, and no, your character did not forget to level Vigor. Think of it like going Hollow in Dark Souls, except someone replaced the humanity system with angry purple rocks.
This debuff stubbornly lingers until you do one of two things: touch a Site of Grace or die. Both options reset the curse and restore your normal health bar. But here is the cruel part—if you stroll right back into one of those fortresses, the curse gleefully returns. It is a cursed revolving door, and I walked through it more times than I care to admit.

Resonating with the Sparkly Shards
Across the Great Hollow map, you can find glowing crystals scattered around the landscape. These smaller crystals match the color of the enormous purple one looming in the center of the map, which is basically your glittering archnemesis. When you approach one of the smaller crystals, a prompt appears that says resonate. Interact with it, and your character will shatter the crystal. It is oddly satisfying, like popping bubble wrap made of cursed gemstones.
Every time one of these crystals breaks, the game notifies you that the great crystal has cracked. You need to resonate with four of these smaller crystals to completely shatter the big one in the center. There are usually around six crystals available during a run, so you have a little wiggle room if one is guarded by something ugly.
The catch? During the first in-game day, those smaller crystals will not appear on your map. You have to find them the old-fashioned way—by running around and using your eyeballs. After you defeat the first Night Boss, however, the crystals become marked. Crystals you have already resonated with show up grey, while untouched ones glow purple on the map. That is very helpful, especially if you are directionally challenged like me.

Breaking the Big One and Claiming the Favor
Once you have resonated with four crystals, the central great crystal will audibly crack and change shape on your map. That is your signal to sprint toward the middle and collect your reward. At the center, you will find a glowing aura, just like the other Shifting Earth event rewards. Interact with it, and you will receive the Favor of the Great Hollow.
This lovely blessing does two things. First, it breaks the Crystal Curse for the rest of the run, meaning you can finally enter the northwest and southeast fortresses without your health bar being chopped in half. Second, it also boosts your art guard whenever all of your Sacred Flasks are exhausted. That little bonus can be a lifesaver in a long boss fight when your healing supply is gone and your survival instinct is the only thing left.

Field Notes From My Misadventures
-
Do not fight elite enemies inside a cursed fortress with half HP unless you enjoy a quick trip back to safety.
-
If you accidentally catch the curse early, just touch a Site of Grace or take a tactical death to reset it.
-
After the first Night Boss falls, open your map and plan a route that hits at least four purple crystal markers.
-
Some crystals have guards nearby, so clear the immediate area before you start resonating.
-
The curse only affects you inside those specific fortress zones, so do not panic if your health bar looks fine elsewhere.
| Situation | Result |
|---|---|
| Enter a northwest or southeast fortress before receiving the Favor | Max HP is cut in half |
| Touch a Site of Grace while cursed | Curse is removed |
| Die while cursed | Curse is removed on respawn |
| Re-enter a fortress before receiving the Favor | Curse returns |
| Resonate with four crystals | The central great crystal cracks |
| Claim the Favor of the Great Hollow | Curse immunity for the rest of the run plus an Art Guard boost when Sacred Flasks are empty |
Once I understood this loop, the Crystal Curse went from a terrifying mystery to just another errand on my Great Hollow checklist. The Favor of the Great Hollow is absolutely worth the detour, especially if you plan to fight inside those fortresses later in the run. So next time your health bar betrays you in the Great Hollow, do not panic. Find four shiny crystals, resonate with them, and break that purple monstrosity. Your future self—armed with an un-halved HP bar—will thank you.
