How I Finally Toppled Everdark Gladius in Nightreign
Beat Everdark Gladius in Elden Ring Nightreign with fire resistance, holy damage, Ironeye, and smart dodges against his explosive sword attacks.
I still remember my first attempt at Everdark Gladius in Elden Ring Nightreign. After the absolute nightmare that was Everdark Libra, I expected another gimmick-heavy disaster. Instead, I got something wonderfully straightforward — a full-on brawl against a fire-infused triple-headed doggo that hits like a truck. And honestly? I loved every painful second of it.
The fight starts in Gladius's second phase, meaning he immediately splits into his three-dog form. That part is familiar if you've fought the original, but at around 75% HP he recombines, and his three heads imbue his sword with fire. That's when the real fight begins. The key difference from the regular version is that Everdark Gladius has far deadlier attacks and AoEs, and his sword swings leave explosive after-effects, much like Heolstor the Nightlord. So how do you survive? Let me walk you through what worked for me.

First, accept that this is an attritional fight. Gladius will chip away at you with fire AoEs and sword swings, and you'll burn through your flasks extremely quickly if you're not careful. Stack as much damage negation, fire resistance, and health flasks as you can. Talismans like Flamedrake are your best friend here, and any resistance-based boss rewards help too. Bring holy damage — it stuns Gladius, slows his aggression, and applies an attack and defense debuff once you hit him enough. That debuff is a lifesaver.
As for your Nightfarer choice, holy Ironeye is still excellent. For once, I wouldn't recommend bringing Wylder, since his optimal setup leans on fire damage, which does almost nothing here. You could still bring him without skill relics and hunt for a couple of holy greatswords — his last-chance mechanic (escaping one instance of deadly damage) can save you from Gladius's fast, high-damage attacks. But if you want to be optimal, do the Shifting Earth Noklateo event and grab the second chance by defeating Astel. That extra margin for error is huge if you don't find any Wending Graces.

Now, let's talk about the attacks that killed me the most. Gladius has several moves that are similar to the original, but with deadly new twists. Here are the ones to watch for:
-
Fiery shockwaves 🔥: Gladius slashes the earth, creating eruptions that run across the ground, then raises his blade and slams it down, creating fissures that explode after a short delay. This is extremely similar to one of Heolstor's big attacks. The key is to dodge a little after the sword hits the ground and the fissures spread — right before they explode. If you're outside the fissures, you don't even need to dodge.
-
Quick charging slashes ⚔️: Gladius holds his sword sideways in his mouth and dashes at you twice in quick succession. Not too hard to dodge, especially since it usually comes after the three heads breathe fire on the ground and charge up.
-
Fire breath 💨: One of his original attacks, but it's easy to get caught out because it's so fast. Look for Gladius building fire in his three mouths — that's your tell.
-
Sword explosion 💥: Another original attack. He stabs the sword into the ground, charges up, then releases a fiery AoE in front of him. The dodge timing is tricky, but you can escape the AoE before the attack lands.
-
Three dog 🐕🐕🐕: Just like the original fight, Gladius splits into three dogs that dash at you in succession when they appear. Watch for the transformation and be ready to roll.
Beyond these, watch for variations on his sword swings. He loves to mix up his combos, so don't get greedy with your own attacks. Position yourself a little away from your other Nightfarers — it's surprisingly easy for two players to get caught in the same AoE and go down, leaving the last person to try and revive while Gladius relentlessly attacks. That happened in my first run, and it's an annoying way for the fight to end.

If you want to chunk down Gladius's massive health bar faster, here's a quick breakdown of what works:
| Damage Type | Effectiveness | How to Apply |
|---|---|---|
| Holy ✨ | Excellent — stuns, staggers, and debuffs | Holy Ironeye, holy greatswords, incantations |
| Bleed 🩸 | Very good — easy to proc | Bleed weapons, Ironeye's bow with bleed arrows |
| Scarlet Rot 🍄 | Very good — easy to proc | Rot pots, rot weapons, rot incantations |
| Poison 🐍 | Decent — harder to trigger | Serpent Bow on Ironeye, poison arrows |
Holy is the standout because of the debuff and stuns, but bleed and scarlet rot are the easiest to proc on him. Poison works too — especially on Ironeye's bow or a Serpent Bow — but it's a bit harder to trigger consistently. I ended up running holy Ironeye with a bleed backup weapon, and the combination melted him.
After about a dozen attempts, I finally took down Everdark Gladius. It wasn't a clean fight — I burned through all my flasks, my teammates were down, and I was one hit from death — but that final holy-infused arrow to his fiery face felt incredible. If you're struggling, remember: stack fire resistance, bring holy damage, keep your distance from your squad, and learn those explosive after-effects. You'll get him. 🎉",
